At the end of the film, Bob whispers something into Charlotte’s ear that is intelligible to the audience before they part ways. The words aren’t in the script, and one can only project what Bob says to Charlotte and believe that to be real. Bob and Charlotte’s relationships lives in the quiet moments in between. Similar to a whisper, they both leave without a trace, and everybody else will always be oblivious to the significance of their relationship. I am inspired by this ‘whisper’ and want to relate it visually to a shadow, the shadows being a metaphor for how their relationship can only bloom in the dark, or in ‘secret’.
Using leaves and their shadows as a framing device, I wanted to portray the fleeting, however important moments that the two main characters spent with one another. The aged leaves represent Bob, meanwhile the younger, greener leaves are representing Charlotte. The singular crack in the leaf at the beginning represents their fragile emotional demeanours, which are tested by the unfamiliar environment around them and the various challenges that come with travelling by your lonesome.
